This question we all are asked during this pandemic that why to clean hands for 20 seconds why not 10 or 5 seconds and some people just tell you that washing hands does not matter and it’s just trick by the government and the world. I will share my experience during this pandemic people not just any people who I know make fun of me while wash my hands for 20 seconds and I just think to myself I’m doing this to protect others if I have the virus, so it does not spread to others and it is the right mind set to have.
It is because The outer layer of corona virus is made of oily lipid molecule and it has a weakness that is contained in soap. This molecule in soap attacks the membrane of corona virus and rips it apart releasing all the substance contained in the virus and all the harmful substance then floats away with water into the sink.
According to Dr. Robert Amler, dean of the School of Health Sciences and Practice at New York Medical College and former CDC chief medical officer in giving an interview was asked the question.
“OK, so we know you’re supposed to wash your hands for 20 seconds. If you only wash your hands for 10 seconds, do you get half of the benefit, or is it all or nothing?”
His answer was
Well, 20 seconds is the recommendation, as you know. I don’t know if that’s been studied or if there’s any real data on what happens with a shorter time. The fact is, your hands have a certain amount of surface area, and you need to spend a second or more in each area. You want to cover the front and the palms of your hands. You want to cover the backs. You want to cover the spaces between the fingers and your thumb—those webs—and if you really scrub all that, it’s just probably going to add up to about 20 seconds.
So it means it means you need to clean your hands for 20 seconds with soap and water to protect yourself and others from corona virus.
NOTE: when washing hands do close the water tap when not being used.
